Sydney’s amazing range of ice creameries, gelatarias and good ‘ol ice cream trucks gave us a lot to think about, but after a few (tasty) brainstorming sessions, we’ve narrowed the list down to 10 of our faves!

Chachas Vegan Gelato
42 Hall Street, Bondi Beach
With over 30 years of experimenting in the ice cream lab, Chachas perfects the post Bondi swim experience with their artisan dairy-free gelato. The rich cashew based gelato is sweetened naturally with fruit and rice malt, with various fruit based flavours all free from preservatives and artificial colours. We recommend trying the miso caramel, pistachio rose, ‘Notella’ and turmeric gelato.

Based in St Leonards, Green Gourmet is a true hidden gem for it’s dairy-free and 100% plant-based ice creams. This family owned restaurant runs an extensive menu featuring vegan Chinese dishes and desserts to end the night on a sweet note. Ever heard of tofu ice cream? Yup, truly unique and pairs well with either their gluten-free cones, vegan cakes, or banana fritters. The tofu ice cream is a must try, along with black sesame, French vanilla and Earl Grey and fig.

Pepitas cleverly dials up the nostalgia with its take on a classic ice cream truck. Find the mint-green Volkswagen Kombi driving around the Northern Beaches (including Curl Curl, Dee Why, Manly and Freshwater). Made with a coconut and cashew base, Pepitas whips up uniquely flavoured sorbets and ice creams that are gluten-free, vegan, with nut-free options available too.
Luckily for you, you don’t have to chase this ice cream van like old times, just track it here and treat yourself to raspberry, cucumber and mint, or coconut and almond scoops.
Go cocoNUTS with Cocowhip’s all natural ice cream made with coconut water, perfect for cooling you down and keeping you hydrated on a hot day. Sweetened with xylitol (a plant derived sweetener) it makes for a guilt free sweet treat.
Choose from a range of fun toppings like raw chocolate, fresh fruits and berries, or rich cacao drizzle – the possibilities are endless. Cocowhip is also gluten free.

There’s a reason you’ll always have to wait in line to sample Gelato Messina’s decadent creations. With new flavours dropping almost everyday, the brand prides itself on whipping everything up in house, including the gelato base and all the toppings that go into them (brownies, fudge, meringues and more). In fact, the owners are so notorious about the quality of produce used, they make all their chocolate from scratch, produce their own milk and have a hazelnut farm in Victoria for house-made Gianduja (think Nutella but a grown up version) so trust us when we say they’re the real deal.
You’ll find over 40 different flavours in the Messina cabinet, along with 5 rotating weekly specials. Dairy free favourites include salted coconut and mango salsa, dark chocolate sorbet, pandan, coconut and more.
Cow and the Moon
181 Enmore Rd, Enmore
Located a few minutes from Newtown station, Cow and the Moon might be one of Sydney’s best kept secrets. Owner John Crowl worked in Italy for several years before opening the coffee and gelato bar with his family, even taking home the title for best gelato in the world during the Gelato World Tour in 2014.
Churning 26 unique flavours made fresh daily, John focuses on using high quality ingredients to create the unique taste and texture that Cow and the Moon is known for. A wide selection of sorbets are 100% dairy-free, vegan, and surprisingly creamy.

Mapo is the new kid on the block that is all about using the freshest natural ingredients in their gelato, with a strong focus on sustainability.
An architect-tuned gelato maker – Matteo Pochintesta, combines industrial elements of plywood and steel, which gives Mapo its sleek and contemporary feel. The carefully handcrafted gelato is stored in silver-lidded pozzetti, a traditional Italian method of storage ensures they are kept fresh at precise temperature throughout the day.
The gelato is made from raw and organic ingredients with no added artificial colours and flavourings, with signature favourites including pistachio, apricot, smoked pineapple, coconut and more.
Rivareno has one commitment: to offer the best possible gelato to Sydney. The Authentic Italian gelato chain does it the Sicilian way, by storing gelato in ‘pozzetti’ (lidded stainless steel containers) keeping the precious cargo at the right temperature and sealing its freshness.
